Black Art History Month unit: African Kente & Kuba textile hands

Black History month unit/projects:

  • sock outline filled with African textile designs
  • African counting book with African numbers
  • Kahoot: quiz about African Kuba, Mud Cloth & Kente textiles
  • Congo. Mali or Ghana digital postcard with "Google for Education" 
  • African textile paper weaving
  • final project: CONNECTING "Global Art Exchange with The Memory Project" exchanging art work with 60 Cameroon students.
  • drawing of a person students saw at a virtual field trip to Legacy Museum in Alabama
  • virtual field trip to the Grammy museum "Music of the civil rights movement" & draw a scene from the civil rights movement. 

unit objectives:

  1. Students use technology creatively for self-expression.
  2. Students use art to make connections.
  3. Art is connected with other subjects in the curriculum  (geography, writing, history)
  4. Art curriculum includes African art along with European art to be inclusive.
  5. African American students heritage is included in the classroom.
  6. Students using the principles of art: pattern, creatively to express their ideas and feelings.
  7. Students learn a new media - weaving by making woven art.
  8. Black lives Matter & the protests around the country have highlighted how important right now it is to make sure students know that bigotry & discrimination is not tolerated at this school, at this district and at this time in America.
